Although ferret legalization in California has so far been unsuccessful, our two inventors saw a need for some new specialty products that would help make the lives of ferrets and their owners more rewarding. So began a productive commercial collaboration. The search for a safe, edible toy started in 1995 after one of the founders had a ferret require surgery to remove a piece of rubber dog toy that caused an intestinal obstruction. Experimentation yielded a formula that was modified numerous times and tested on hundreds of ferrets until the version was found that they liked best. Most ferrets are “crazy about” this edible toy which is now known as CHEWEASEL®. Ferrets like it so well they become very possessive of their toy and playing with it is one of their favorite pastimes. Prior to marketing the toy, the inventors saw the need to verify that it was indeed safe from a recognized authority on ferret health. They asked the renowned veterinarian and ferret owner Dr. Susan A. Brown of the Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital in Illinois if she would test the toys. She agreed and the resulting trial was conducted over a period of several months. Dr. Brown suggested some changes, which were implemented, resulting in the final formula. The toys were patented with a utility patent from the U.S. Patent office. As a result of the testing she conducted, Dr. Brown, who does not usually endorse products, became so enthusiastic about the toys that she began to recommend them and carry them at her Veterinary Clinic. Hyper-Fur Ferrets’ Products is constantly receiving wonderful notes and e-mail from people about the fun their ferrets are having with CHEWEASEL®. And it seems the people have derived almost as much pleasure from observing their ferrets with CHEWEASEL® as their ferrets have playing with the toys. Although Hyper-Fur Ferrets’ Products is a fairly small company, we do offer wholesale prices to pet stores, veterinarians and shelters who want to resell our products across the country.
